30 years recording the heart
People from Girona are grateful that it’s been 30 years that a group of scientists from IMIM-Hospital del Mar and experts from the hospitals of Girona are closely following the evolution of their hearts. The REGICOR project celebrated on May 30 its 30th anniversary with a scientific meeting with more than 250 participants, wher they recalled some of the most important achievements of these three decades.
To be highlighted amongst these is the establishment, for the first time in history, of the incidence of heart attacks in Spain, which is about 200 in 100,000. Furthermore, Spain’s biggest DNA library has been created, which contains samples from about 10,000 healthy people and 10,000 cardiovascular patients, as well as information about the evolution of their diseases.
Another important result has been the creation of adapted cardiovascular risk tables, which are currently used in all Catalonia and which have been proposed for the rest of Spain. Until now the American tables were used, but in the US there’s three times more cases of heart attacks than here.

Topics in High-dimensional Genetic Data Analysis.

The course on “Topics in High-dimensional Genetic Data Analysis”, organized by Joan Vila, researcher of the Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Genetics research group at IMIM, will take place next September 7. The course will be given by Dr. Andrea S Foulkes, Associate Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Massachusetts School of Public Health and Health Sciences, and will take place at the Còrsega i Sardenya room at the IMIM (Dr Aiguader, 80).

This course is aimed at researchers interested in new genetic data analysis techniques and is focused on:

  • Classification and Regression trees i Cost-complexity pruning
  • Random Forests
  • Logic Regression
  • Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines

Andrea S Faulken research includes developing analytic methods for characterizing the relationships among high dimensional molecular and cellular data and measures of disease progression. Dr. Foulkes is working on establishing methods for understanding the complex relationships among HIV-1 genotypic markers of resistance to antiretroviral drugs, cellular immune modulation and clinical outcomes.

Places are limited, so people who want to register should fill in the registration form.
