  • CASSANDRA - REGICOR Regional projection of 10-year coronary events

Patent application submitted 20 September 2013

The CASSANDRA-REGICOR system allows estimation of the number of coronary events in a population within 10 years using projections based on population studies in Catalonia. The estimates apply the anticipated demographic changes, the initial prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, and the 10-year changes anticipated over those 10 years for Girona, Catalonia and Spain. The estimates can be done for other areas under certain conditions.

This system has been developed jointly with the Department of Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya as a project to define the objectives of the Health Plan and the Directive Plan for Diseases of the Circulatory System.

  • Downloadable REGICOR cardiovascular risk calculator

Patent application submitted 01 January 2001

REGICOR researchers have developed an adaptation of the Framingham function, initially for the HERACLES network and now officially adopted by the National Health System networks in Catalunya, the Basque Country (Euskadi), and the Balearic Islands. An HTML application is now available that makes it easy to calculate and print risk estimates, along with some targeted heart health advice

  • Framingham tables adapted for use in the Catalan population

Patent application submitted 01 January 2001

These tables were adapted to the characteristics of the Catalan population using a well-defined process of calibration [1-4], and validated with data on the Catalan population. The adapted tables allow 10-year risk estimation for a coronary event, angina, or myocardial infarction (fatal or nonfatal).

To assess risk, the table corresponding to each patient must first be selected, according to the patient’s diabetes status, tobacco use, sex and age. The next step is to locate on the table the intersection of the patient’s systolic and diastolic blood pressure and total cholesterol levels, and to find the column with the central value ±20 mg/dL (±0.5 mmol/dl). The value in the cell identified by this process indicates the 10-year risk, which can be interpreted using the color coding on the legend at the bottom of the tables.

If the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol value is available, the risk level can be adjusted by multiplying that number by 1.5 if it is <35 mg/dL, by 0.5 if it is >59 mg/dL. The risk level is not adjusted for values ranging from 35 to 59 mg/dL [5,7].

  • REGICOR: Heart registry study in the province of Girona, 1978-2008

Patent application submitted 01 January 2001

This document, Registre Gironí del Cor: L'estudi Regicor a les comarques de Girona 1978-2008, was presented at the 30th anniversary celebration of the REGICOR study. It is available in Catalan, Spanish and English.

The large volume of publications that have resulted from the REGICOR study is well known internationally by all who are interested in diseases of the cardiovascular system. However, REGICOR has made important contributions not only in the area of epidemiology but also in the planning and restructuring of healthcare services. Within the normal everyday tasks at Dr. Josep Trueta University Hospital, the members of the REGICOR team have been able to find a way to combine good clinical practice with epidemiologic research and at the same time serve as a catalyst for many individuals who have contributed their efforts and skills to advance the project.

On the other hand, we would emphasize the importance of REGICOR since its inception in developing the plan for the prevention and treatment of diseases of the circulatory apparatus, Pla Director de Malalties de l'Aparell Circulatori, of the Catalan government’s Department of Health, both in terms of epidemiologic information and of personal effort and commitment, which was particularly notable in the participation of the president of the advisory council (Consell Assessor) and the director of the healthcare plan.
